BattleTechno-Racism.org (BT-R) WAS FOUNDED IN 2024, by Everett Kelsey, to address potential irreversible implications unregulated AI will have on society.
BT-R's MISSION IS TO BATTLE TECHNO-RACISM AND BIAS being baked into AI deep learning algorithms, in an effort to preserve human dignity in an ever increasing augmented world.
CURRENTLY, EMPHASIS IN THE RACE TOWARD ARTIFICIAL GENERAL INTELLIGENCE (AGI), HAS BEEN ON TECHNOLOGY; rather than ethical, diverse representations of society. Whereby, inadvertently baking bias into outputs and future source data.
COGNITIVE BIAS "Facial recognition risks being weaponized by law enforcement against marginalized communities around the world. From New Delhi to New York, this invasive technology turns our identities against us and undermines human rights." (Matt Mahmoudi, AI and Human Rights Researcher at Amnesty International)
"People of color have a new enemy: TECHNO-RACISM...And while you may not have heard of it, it’s baked into some of the technology we encounter every day. Digital technologies used by government agencies and private companies can unwittingly discriminate against people of color, making techno-racism a new and crucial part of the battle for civil rights, experts say." (CNN)
"Unconscious bias refers to the deep-seated prejudices we all absorb due to living in deeply unequal societies. Unconscious or implicit bias can lead to instinctive assumptions..." (BBC 3/28/21)
THE BIG THREAT CHALLENGING OUR EFFORT TOWARDS AGI, is our inherent flaws as humans reflected in our: news, politics, creative content, etc. from which current LLMs forage and harvest data.
Tech companies acknowledge machine-learning algorithms can perpetuate discrimination and need improvement. Earlier this month, Bloomberg analyzed more than 5,000 images generated by Stability AI, and found that its program amplified stereotypes about race and gender, typically depicting people with lighter skin tones as holding high-paying jobs while subjects with darker skin tones were labeled “dishwasher” and “housekeeper.” (The New York Times 7/4/23)
DIVERSITY IMBALANCE IN TECH HAS ALWAYS BEEN PROFOUND In 2023, Black founders in the US got only 0.48% of all venture dollars, about $661 million out of $136 billion, TechCrunch reports. The repercussions of which have a ripple effect in:
IN THE FIFTH INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION (5IR), Titans of AI are quick to respond to concerns over the loss of jobs by saying, "New jobs will be created...". However, what they don't explain, is who will have access to education for those jobs; and what will happen to the current large population without accessibility to wifi, and/or financial resources for education in the tech sector.
BT-R IS CALLING FOR SUPPORT in creating initiatives, and building "Good AI" systems to address:
